About Camp

CAMPABILITY is a day camp for children with a variety of abilities where each day is full of possibilities. CAMPABILITY was started in 2009 by a speech-language pathologist and an occupational therapist assistant in order to meet the therapeutic recreational needs of youth with special needs in Haywood and surrounding counties during the summer months. It has since evolved to focus on therapeudic needs, spiritual needs, and unique experiences for teenagers to serve children who have disabilities through a partnership with Youth For Christ's Outdoor Mission Camp.  The camp is supported by individual volunteers, parents, church youth groups,  special education teachers, and therapist from the Haywood County school district.

Our Goals

1. To provide a safe and fun camp for children who have disabilities.

We provide this service because many children with disabilities are unable to attend traditional summer camps. We believe that these kids and their parents deserve a summer camp where their kids can be understood and encouraged.

2. To provide local teens an engaging experience through one on one interaction with a camper who has disabilities.

We provide this opportunity for two reasons. One reason is that many of the children in our community who have disabilities are stigmatized by their peers. By allowing teenagers to interact with campers who have disabilities on a one on one basis, we attempt to eliminate those false assumptions.

The second reason is that teenagers are gifted in so many ways. Many teenagers  are gifted in the area of working with children who have special needs. There are very few areas where these teenagers can exercise that gift. By providing them with the opportunity to serve, we hope to grow their skills and encourage their interest in serving children.

3. To provide children who have disabilities a opportunity to hear about Jesus and respond.

In our community, one of the most unwitnessed to groups are the children who  have special needs. We believe that Jesus has called us to minister to this unique group of people.
